Q: Will the spray tan protect me from getting a sunburn?
A: No! The spray tan solution offers zero skin protection. When going into the sun you should always wear sun protection, even on cloudy and overcast days. By having a spray tan you are less likely to roast yourself in the sun as you are already fabulously tanned. You will however still tan if you have had a spray tan.
Q: Is the spray tanning solution safe?
A: DHA (the main ingredient in spray tan solution) has been tested, and approved by the FDA. However there are a multitude of different self tan products on the market with added ingredients and not all the extra ingredients have been tested.
Q: Is there anything that I can do to ensure that I get the best spray tan?
A: Absolutely. One of the most important things you need to do before having a spray tan is exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! We cannot stress this enough. The less dead skins cells you have on the surface of your skin the more long lasting and even your spray tan will be. Another important step is to moisturise your skin every day after your spray tan. This prevents your skin from drying out and your tan fading prematurely.
Q: How brown will I be?
A: It depends on the individual as everybody’s skin develops its own individual and unique colour. Some people go very brown, others get just a glow. Another influential factor is your spray tan technician, how they spray and the results achieved can be completely different to another spray tan tech even if they are using the exact same solution and equipment.
Q: How long will the tan last?
A: This all depends on how well you prepared your skin before your appointment and how you look after it. Work on an average of 5-10 days with 7 being the average.
Q: How soon after the spray tan can I shower?
A: Wait at least 8-10 hours before showering. If you are being sprayed in evening – give the white sheets a miss.
Q: My last spray tan was different than the previous one, even though it was done by the same person
A: Your skin is a living organ and like any living thing it is affected by many things. Stress, medication, time of the month, everything we do, feel and eat can have an affect.
Q: What if I have a very fair skin that has never been able to tan?
A: Then you are the reason why spray tans where created! Think of the solution as a wet tea bag, you put the tea bag onto a white piece of paper. What happens? The paper gets stained brown, the same thing happens with your pale skin and the solution. All we are basically doing is staining your skin. This isn’t too say that spray tans are only for pale people, if you are already tanned and wish to be darker then spray tans are also for you.
Q: Will I spray tan evenly if I have hair on my legs/arms?
A: Hair doesn’t cause any problems. Once the spray tan process is over the excess droplets are gently dabbed away with a tissue.
Q: What if spray tanning solution will get into my eyes?
A: When your face is being sprayed keep your eyes closed. But accidents can and do happen and if by some chance the solution does go into your eyes don’t worry its not harmful.
Q: Does the solution have an unpleasant smell?
A: Unfortunately some do have a rather pungent smell to them. Although That’s So (the solution we use) smells like marzipan. You will be able to smell it faintly if you sniff yourself but it isn’t strong enough for others to notice. Once you have had a shower any remaining odour will be gone.
Q: I had bad experience with a spray tan before. Is spray tanning is not for me?
A: No, there are many variables that can affect the end result. Your skin condition at the time, the spray tan technician etc. Remember that not all spray tan solutions are created equal, there are some brilliant products on the market and some not so brilliant one’s. You may just have to play around with different brands to find the one that suits you.
Q: A friend recommended a spray tan product. I went orange and she looked gorgeous. Why?
A: You and your friend have two completely different skins. There are also different colours in which to choose from. If she has a more tanned complexion to you and she uses a product for darker skins and you are pale then you will unfortunately turn an attractive shade of orange. Rather go for a lighter shade, if that still doesn’t work then you are going to have to try different products and brands to find the one that suits you.
Q: Can I go swimming after having a spray tan?
A: Rather not, wait until the next day if possible. Chlorine pools tend to fade you tan more quickly and if you are swimming, be it in the ocean or pool, keep your swims short.
